Interactions between simultaneous contrast and coloured afterimages.

چکیده
Coloured afterimages were obtained after fixation of a neutral grey spot on a coloured surround The colour of the spot afterimage was similar to that of the previous surrounding area. and was found to have two components which could be elicited independently. Firstly. complementary afterimages were generated by the subjective contrast colour which was induced into the grey spot during the adaptation period Secondly. the complementary afterimage of the surround at the end of the adaptation period was capable of inducing contrast colour into the neutral spot of the test field. Thus simultaneous contrast colours can produce afterimages (successive contrast). and conversely. coloured afterimages can induce simultaneous contrast colour.

Nonlinear combination of luminance excursions during flicker, simultaneous contrast, afterimages and binocular fusion
The changes in apparent brightness or color, induced into a test spot by a surround, can be greatly enhanced either by flickering the test spot between two luminances, or by binocularly fusing a pair of test spots of different luminances. Simultaneous contrast, in which a white surround makes a grey spot look darker, is greatly enhanced if the spot (not the surround) flickers between black and ...
متن کاملA Computational Model of Afterimages based on Simultaneous and Successive Contrasts
Negative afterimage appears in our vision when we shift our gaze from an over stimulated original image to a new area with a uniform color. The colors of negative afterimages differ from the old stimulating colors in the original image when the color in the new area is either neutral or chromatic. The interaction between stimulating colors in the test and inducing field in the original image ch...
متن کاملAfterimage watercolors: an exploration of contour-based afterimage filling-in
We investigated filling-in of colored afterimages and compared them with filling-in of "real" colors in the watercolor illusion. We used shapes comprising two thin adjacent undulating outlines of which the inner or the outer outline was chromatic, while the other was achromatic. The outlines could be presented simultaneously, inducing the original watercolor effect, or in an alternating fashion...
متن کاملAttentional effects on afterimages: Theory and data
We explore attentional effects on afterimages in the framework of the FACADE model of visual perception. We first show that the FACADE model can account for the experimental findings of Suzuki and Grabowecky [Suzuki, S., & Grabowecky, M. (2003). Attention during adaptation weakens negative afterimages. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance 29, 793-807] that afteri...
متن کاملAn illusion induced by an illusion – perceptual filling-in of coloured negative afterimages
Visual filling-in relates to a perceptual phenomenon in which a stimulus pattern apparently undergoes dynamic changes assuming an attribute such as colour, texture, or brightness from the surround. This perceptual completion effect has up to now been shown only for real images. Here, we present filling-in in negative afterimages, a phenomenon not yet reported. Using coloured disk-ring patterns ...
